The D.W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County has received Grade Level Reading grants from the Twin Lakes Community Foundation and the Arkansas Community Foundation totaling $1,000. The funds will allow the library to expand its existing 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program to income-based daycares in both Cotter and Norfork. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is an effort to engage parents and caregivers in a commitment to read 1000 books to their child before entering kindergarten. Library officials say reading aloud to a child is the single most important thing to do in preparation for learning to read. The program has built-in incentives and allows the parent and child to read at their own pace. Most importantly, it has the potential to create a culture of reading in homes where it is currently not a priority, changing the trajectory of young lives one book at a time.

All children’s programs are provided at no charge as a service of the library through donations and sponsorships. For more information, visit the library’s website at www.baxlib.org or visit the Children’s Desk at the library, located at 300 Library Hill in Mountain Home.
