The high school graduating class of 2021 will enter classrooms as sophomores this fall with two new requirements to address before obtaining diplomas in Arkansas.A new law approved by the general assembly in 2017 mandates students receive instruction in financial literacy.

The law doesn’’t require schools to specifically offer a personal finance course. Instead, Dr. Jake Long, Superintendent of Mountain Home schools, says the requirement will be met in a number of ways without specifically offering a personal finance course.

In addition to the financial literacy requirement, a second law passed in 2017, Act 478, requires students seeking a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma pass the Arkansas Civics Exam with a score of 60 percent or better. This requirement also begins with the 2018-2019 school year.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offers a copy of the questions in PDF form on its website civics exam.
