LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP)   The Arkansas School Safety Commission has crafted a preliminary report calling for every school campus to have some form of armed security when children and staff are present.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the assessment concludes armed security is a “best practice” for schools but that related decisions should be made on a local school district level.

The preliminary report also includes proposals on school safety audits, emergency plans, mental health services, threat assessments and protecting school buildings against active shooters.

Commission member David Hopkins says funding needs to be provided for an armed presence on campus.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson formed the commission in March after the Florida school shooting that killed 17.

The preliminary report is due to the governor by Sunday. A final report is due in November.
