North Arkansas Electric Cooperative officials advise its members are reporting having been contacted by phone scammers Thursday. One member reported the caller, claiming be from the electric company, demanded the member pay his or her allegedly overdue electric bill immediately by purchasing a prepaid card at Dollar General and then calling 800-679-9603. Cooperative officials say this is not an NAEC number.

Another member reported the caller said he was on the way to her business to disconnect power if she didn’t comply. NAEC says its employees will not threaten members with disconnection in this manner and never require members to use third-party payment methods.

NAEC says, unfortunately, several variations of this payment scam have reached its members in recent years. Those wanting to confirm they are speaking with an NAEC employee are always encouraged to hang up and dial the cooperative at 870-895-3221.

In addition, NAEC members may access their account information or pay their bill through the Member Account Portal at www.naeci.com at any time.
