Earlier in July, Cher posted a series of tweets that suggested she was recording a whole album of ABBA songs, and now the legendary entertainer has confirmed her plans for the covers project. The singer, who co-stars in the new film sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, appeared on the Today show Tuesday and shared some details about the record.
“After I did [a cover of] ‘Fernando’ [for the movie,] I thought it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs, so I did!” she told Kathie Lee Gifford. “It’s not what you think of when you think ABBA, ’cause I did it in a different way.”
While no confirmed release date for the album has been announced, in one of the aforementioned tweets, Cher wrote, “Think album will be out in sept.” Her most recent studio effort, Closer to the Truth, came out in 2013.
Cher’s rendition of “Fernando,” a duet with her Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again co-star Andy Garcia, already has been released as a single, and peaked at #22 on Billboard‘s Adult Contemporary chart earlier this month. The track also appears on the film’s soundtrack, which hit stores this past Friday.
Cher plays Ruby, the mother of Meryl Streep‘s character in the movie, which opens in theaters this Friday, July 20.
