RhinoBesides his work with Genesis and as a hugely successful solo artist, Phil Collins collaborated with an impressive list of other musicians during his long career…as a drummer, singer, producer and more. Now, a compilation titled Plays Well with Others, featuring highlights of his many collaborative endeavors, will be released on September 28 as a four-CD box set and digital download.
The collection’s first three discs feature studio recordings to which Collins contributed covering the respective periods of 1969 to 1982, 1982 to 1991, and 1991 to 2011. The fourth disc collects various live performances spanning from 1981 to 2002.
Among the many stars whose studio collaborations with Collins appear on the compilation are Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, David Crosby, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Gary Brooker, ABBA singer Frida, Adam Ant, Philip Bailey, Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, The Four Tops, Tears for Fears, George Martin, and Lil’ Kim. The box set also features tracks by the jazz-fusion group Brand X and the all-star 1985 charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas (Feed the World),” to which Phil contributed vocals and drums.
The live disc features performances by George Harrison, The Bee Gees, and The Phil Collins Big Band, as well as separate onstage collaborations between Phil and Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, and The Buddy Rich Big Band. Closing things out are four performances from the 2002 Party at the Palace concert celebrating Queen Elizabeth II‘s Golden Jubilee, featuring Collins backing Clapton, Annie Lennox, Joe Cocker, and Bryan Adams.
“During [my life] I’ve played with most of my heroes, most have become close friends,” says Collins in a statement. “Over these 4 CDs you’ll find a mere smattering of those moments.”
