For BMG by Pip; Brantley Gutierrez Rick Astley has now jammed on stage with alternative rockers Foo Fighters multiple times, each time performing the ’80s pop star’s signature hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” a.k.a. the “rickroll” song. So would Astley and the Foos ever take their live partnership to the studio for a collaboration?
“I would doubt that in the extreme, but you never know,” Astley, who just released a new studio album called Beautiful Life, tells NME. “I know Dave Grohl‘s the kind of person who doesn’t stop doing things, so who knows whether he — or the rest of the band — would want to. In a parallel universe, who knows?”
If that opportunity did arise, though, Astley would “love” to collaborate with the Foo Fighters.
“Of course I would,” he says. “Who wouldn’t want to get in a room with Foo Fighters and say, ‘Right, what are we doing then?’ But I can’t exactly see how that would work from their side. I think they’ve got enough fish to fry. But yeah, it would be a great fun thing to do, that’s for sure.”
Astley reveals that he does have Grohl’s phone number, but, he says, “I wouldn’t be calling him to ask him to [record with me]. I’m not turning it into something it’s not. They’re just a really lovely bunch of guys who are very generous with their love of what other people do.”
Meanwhile, Foo Fighters’ current U.S. tour has featured an appearance by an even more unexpected guest: John Travolta. The actor has taken the stage with the Foos twice this year, each time during the band’s rendition of Travolta’s famous duet with Olivia Newton-John from the film Grease, “You’re the One that I Want.”
