ABC/Heidi GutmanTo coincide with President Donald Trump‘s state visit to the U.K. last week, a group of Green Day fans launched a campaign to make the band’s 2004 political anthem “American Idiot” Britain’s number-one single. While the track didn’t manage to top the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart, the campaign did seem to have an impact stateside.
As Billboard reports, downloads of “American Idiot” increased by 322 percent the week ending July 12. The track also debuts on Billboard‘s Hot Rock Songs chart, which began in 2009, at number 23.
“American Idiot,” which was written during the George W. Bush administration, was a hit when it was originally released, reaching number one on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart and number five on Mainstream Rock Songs.
