Columbia RecordsA new Bob Dylan compilation called Live 1962-1966: Rare Performances from The Copyright Collections will be released as a two-CD set and digitally this Friday, July 27.

As its title suggests, the album features various concert performances dating from the early years of the folk-rock legend’s career.  As for the “Copyright Collections” part of the title, most of the collection’s 28 tracks were previously released as a series of limited-edition compilations in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in order to protect Dylan’s copyrights on the material.

All but one song on the Live 1962-1966‘s first disc feature Dylan performing solo with acoustic guitar and harmonica. The tracks include tunes recorded in 1962 at the New York City coffeehouse Gerde’s Folk City, in 1963 at historic shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Town Hall, in 1964 at London’s Royal Festival Hall and at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. The disc also includes a duet Dylan and Joan Baez performed at the famous 1963 March on Washington civil-rights rally.

The second disc begins with a variety of solo acoustic performances Bob gave at various venues during his spring 1965 U.K. tour. It also features a tune he played at the Hollywood Bowl in September 1965 with accompaniment from Al Kooper and future Band guitarist Robbie Robertson and drummer Levon Helm; a song from his infamous “going electric” set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival; and a few tunes from his 1966 U.K. tour with a backing group whose members — with the exception of drummer Mickey Jones — went on form The Band.

The release of Live 1962-1966 coincides with the launch of Dylan’s new tour of the Far East, Australia and New Zealand, which gets underway this Friday in Seoul, South Korea.
