Allman Brothers Band Recording CompanyA CD featuring highlights from the second series of concerts that The Allman Brothers Band ever played at New York City’s famous Fillmore East venue will get its first wide release on August 10. Fillmore East February 1970 includes seven performances culled from shows that the group played with The Grateful Dead and Love on February 11, 13 and 14 of that year.
The concerts were recorded by The Dead’s legendary soundman, Owsley “Bear” Stanley, and the album is being issued as the second installment of the archival Bear’s Sonic Journals series. Among the songs is the first known recording of Allmans guitarist Dickey Betts‘ memorable instrumental, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” The album also features renditions of “Whipping Post,” the epic, Donovan-inspired “Mountain Jam,” and the classic blues covers “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Statesboro Blues” and “Trouble No More.”
Fillmore East February 1970 originally was available as a limited-edition mail-order release, but has long been out of print. This new version has been freshly mastered from the original tapes from Stanley’s archives, and features new album art and liner notes, as well as rare photos from the shows.
In the album’s original liner notes, Bear, who died in a 2011 car accident, recalled, “I had no prior experience with mixing [the Allman Brothers’] music, so I hope you don’t mind the rough edges in my mixes here…There was a wonderful feeling at these concerts that made the shows a lot of fun for us all.”
Prior to the CD’s release, a high-res digital version of Fillmore East February 1970 will be available for purchase on July 27 at OwsleyStanleyFoundation.org. Full digital recordings of the February 11, 13 and 14, 1970, concerts also will be sold at the site.
