MJ Kim/MPL Communications Ltd.At the end of a Q&A event at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts on Wednesday, Paul McCartney revealed he’d be playing a surprise show today in his hometown, and now full details of the performance have emerged.

BBC News reports that the former Beatles star performed for about 250 people on Thursday afternoon at the famed Liverpool venue the Cavern Club.

According to the BBC, Sir Paul played a 28-song set that included a wide selection of Beatles and solo hits and gems, as well as four tunes from his upcoming album, Egypt Station: “Come On to Me,” “Confidante,” “Fuh You” and “Who Cares.”

The show was announced early on Thursday via McCartney’s website and only 175 tickets were sold to lucky fans who managed to make their way to the Echo Arena box office in Liverpool.

“Coming back here is pretty amazing for me,” the rock legend told the crowd at the club, which was rebuilt after the original venue closed in 1973. The Beatles, of course, often played at the Cavern early in their career.

“Imagine this for me — all these years ago when we played the Cavern we didn’t know if we’d have any future,” McCartney said. “But we did OK.”

The show started with a jam by McCartney and his backing band, who then kicked into Eddie Cochran‘s “Twenty Flight Rock,” the song Paul played for John Lennon when he auditioned to join Lennon’s pre-Beatles group The Quarrymen.

In the middle of the tune, McCartney stopped to berate audience members who were taking photos and videos with their phones, something they’d been instructed not to do.

The Cavern Club gig is the latest intimate U.K. performance McCartney has given in recent weeks as Egypt Station‘s September 7 release date approaches.
