The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) has announced it will consider the Old Galatia Church, near Norfork in Baxter County, for listing on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places when it meets on Wednesday morning at 10:00. The meeting will take place at the Department of Arkansas Heritage Building in Little Rock.
The Old Galatia Church on Highway 5 southeast of Norfork is a circa 1900 one-room vernacular building. Artificial siding and replacement windows preclude its listing on the National Register.
According to the Arkansas Register nomination, The Galatia Church was constructed around 1900 by members of the local community on land donated by the Lackey family in the 1880s and is an important local testament to the history of the farming communities of the area at the turn of the 20th century.
The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage division that identifies, evaluates, registers and preserves the states cultural resources. Other divisions are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Delta Cultural Center, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, the Historic Arkansas Museum and the Arkansas State Archives.
