LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ Arkansas officials have rejected three more applications for new open-enrollment charter schools, increasing the total number of such applications denied this week to six.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the state’s Charter Authorizing Panel rejected applications Thursday for charter schools in Searcy, Pine Bluff and Hartford. The panel denied three other applications Wednesday, but approved one for the Premier High School of North Little Rock.

The decisions on all seven applications for the 2019-20 school year are now subject to final action by the Arkansas Board of Education, which can accept the panel’s decisions or conduct its own hearing.

Scott Smith is executive director of the Arkansas Public School Resource Center, which advocates for charters. He says the panel “did a good job of thoroughly vetting the applications.”
