LONOKE, Ark. (AP) – One person was killed and several others were displaced when fire damaged an apartment building in Lonoke County.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says eight apartment units were considered a total loss following Saturday’s fire.

Lonoke Fire Chief Justin Whittenburg says one person died in the fire. His name was not immediately released.

Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Noble says the cause of the blaze has not been determined although a resident reported that the fire began in the kitchen of one of the apartment units. The Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Officials say the Red Cross of Little Rock is helping several displaced families and tenants find new homes.
