Appleseed RecordingsNewly recorded tracks by Bruce Springsteen and Donovan are among the 57 tunes featured on a new compilation celebrating the 21st anniversary of the folk label Appleseed Recordings that will be released on October 19.
Appleseed’s 21st Anniversary: Roots and Branches is a three-disc set made up mainly of tracks from the label’s archives, along with nine previously unreleased songs. Among them are Springsteen’s rendition of the late Pete Seeger‘s classic “If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)” and Donovan’s version of the traditional tune “Wild Mountain Thyme,” which also has been covered by The Byrds and Joan Baez.
Other previously unreleased tracks on the album include recordings by late folk singers John Stewart and Jesse Winchester.
The compilation also includes Springsteen’s version of the spiritual “We Shall Overcome,” as well as songs featuring Baez, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Al Stewart, Jonathan Edwards, Levon Helm, Arlo Guthrie and David Bromberg.
The collection’s three discs are themed to correspond with the three philosophies to which Appleseed Recordings is devoted. Disc one is titled “Let the Truth Be Told,” disc two is called “The Wisdom Keepers” and disc three is titled “Keeping the Songs Alive.”
