LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ The owners of the Buffalo River watershed’s only large-scale hog farm in Newton County are proposing to build another hog operation near the Arkansas River and Cedar Creek. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the farm is at least the second one proposed by the owners of C&H Hog Farms within the past year for the state’s northwest corner. Both have met opposition from people concerned about smell and the potential effect on recreational activities.
An application submitted to environmental regulators says the nearly 10,400-hog
farm in Altus would have three indoor holding ponds for manure that would be
spread on nearly 2,000 acres (809 hectares) of row crop land owned by dozens of
people in Franklin and Johnson counties.
The Arkansas Farm Bureau said Thursday it’s aware of discussions to open a hog
farm but had not been involved.
