A vicious dog ordinance will go into effect in Harrison after being worked on for a few months. The Harrison City Council voted during Thursday night’s meeting to approve the ordinance following Abbie Thompson getting attacked by three boxer mixes nearly two weeks ago at the Maplewood Cemetery.

According to Springfield television stations KYTV and KSPR, the ordinance describes a vicious or dangerous dog as “one that has exhibited fierce or vicious behavior toward a person or has attacked a person or domestic animal and causes injury or property damage.” The ordinance details steps an owner would need to take if the dog is considered vicious or threatening including posting a “Beware of Dog” sign on the premises, keeping the dog indoors or in a kennel and keeping the dog on a leash and a muzzle while it’s outdoors. A violation of the ordinance could result in a fine between $250 and $1,000.

The council passed an emergency clause allowing the ordinance to go in effect after it’s published. Ordinances normally go into effect 30 days after its approval.
