Arkansas land commissioner candidate visits Mountain Home

A candidate for the office of Arkansas state land commissioner paid a visit to the Twin Lakes Area on Tuesday. Tommy Land was the featured speaker during the Baxter County Republican Party’s monthly dinner at Western Sizzlin’.

The Heber Springs resident says his background in real estate will help him if he’s elected.

The land commissioner’s office has to work on tax-delinquent real estate and property belonging to the state of Arkansas, and it’s also responsible for leasing and permitting of minerals on state-owned lands. Land says mineral rights are something he’s familiar with as a resident and real estate agent from Cleburne County.

Land is looking to succeed current land commissioner John Thurston who is unable to run for the position due to term limits. Land had praise for the job Thurston has done in the office including making it more digitally accessible to the public.

One thing Land says he would like to accomplish if elected to the position is to increase the sales from the office.

Land will take on Democrat Larry Williams and Libertarian T.J. Campbell for the land commissioner’s office in the general election on November 6th.
