During the August meeting of the school board, Bakersfield School District Superintendent Dr. Amy Britt announced Head Start has requested a partnership with the district and a memorandum of understanding will be drawn up between the two parties.

According to the West Plains Daily Quill, Britt said Head Start would operate its own center on the Bakersfield school campus, providing and funding its own employees and program. Head Start is offered regionally through Ozark Action.

The memorandum to be drawn up will address fencing, fire alarms, fire-rated doors, a kitchen cart and lighted exit. Some of the school’s wooden playground equipment may have to be taken down or moved. The Head Start program will staff and clean its room and share in communication.

Dr. Britt also announced progress is being made on the district’s registered apprenticeship program and two new buses have been added to the district’s fleet.

Other highlights from the meeting included the district receiving a bid to replace the gym roof for $80,000, along with an alternative bid by DeWitt Roofing in Springfield for $3,000, and an update on the FEMA shelter. The building is still on track to be finished around the end of September or beginning of October, despite a six- to eight-week delay in the arrival of special windows ordered for the shelter.

The Bakersfield School Board typically meets in each third Thursday evening at 6:00 each month in the board room on the district campus.
