As Homecoming Week begins Monday for the Mountain Home School District, the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor is five days away from inducting its Class of 2018. Two of the honorees to be enshrined on Saturday will be Mountain Home’s state championship boys’ golf teams from 2006 and 2007.
Brad Morris served as the head coach for both squads, and he says the golfers were thrilled when they received the announcement.
Listen:
In 2006, the Bombers captured the Class 6A state championship with a score of 299, ending up 11 strokes better than Sylvan Hills. Their season record was 39-1. Mountain Home’s Brad Simons was the individual medalist with a 71, and teammate Garett Wilhite ended up one stroke back for second place. Ryan Williams nearly finished third, but he lost the playoff for the position. Simons and Wilhite both went on to Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock for the Overall State Individual Tournament. Simons came away with the crown, and Wilhite finished fourth.
The Bombers again encountered Sylvan Hills in the 2007 Class 6A State Tournament, and the schools went to a sudden-death playoff after both finished with 301. Simons and Wilhite were chosen to be the playoff golfers after they shot 71 and 73 respectively. The senior duo won the first playoff hole to give Mountain Home the championship repeat and a record of 39-2.
Morris says as good as his golfers were individually, what made them even better was treating each outing as a team effort.
Listen:
Morris reiterates his pride in the men his golfers have become since leaving high school, and he credits the family atmosphere surrounding the teams.

The 2006 and 2007 boys’ golf teams will be inducted at the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor Banquet Saturday afternoon in the Mountain Home High School cafeteria. The reception begins at noon, and the banquet begins an hour later.
