Homecoming Week at the Mountain Home School District is over halfway through, and the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor is just two days away from inducting its Class of 2018. One of the honorees will be Mountain Home High School graduate Bernard “Sonny” Ekdahl.

Ekdahl moved to Mountain Home from Chicago in 1953 and was convinced by Ike Sharp and another coach at Mountain Home Junior High School to try out for football. When he first began, his shoulder pads fit nicely around his neck and didn’t come close to his shoulders, and his hip pads did not make it around his hips.

The team began to improve in 1955 when coaches Don Dempsey and Ted Rogers arrived on the Mountain Home campus. In the fall of 1956, Ekdahl’s senior year, the Bombers’ only loss of the season was to Harrison. Ekdahl finished with All-State and All-District honors, and he was voted the District 1A outstanding lineman. He also was able to take part in the All-State game.

After graduation, Ekdahl went on to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He has resided in Searcy since 1964 where he purchased Citizens Abstract Company and operated it for 43 years before selling it in 2006. Currently, he spends a portion of his retirement sailing on Greers Ferry Lake.

Ekdahl will receive his induction at the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor Banquet Saturday afternoon at Mountain Home High School cafeteria. The reception begins at noon, and the banquet is scheduled for 1:00.
