The Mountain Home High School football team had their best offensive showing of the season Friday night but, unfortunately, so did their opponent. Brad Haworth has details on the game.
Listen:
Going into Friday night’s game, Sylvan Hills had scored only 62 points all season, and the Bombers only had 59 points. So an offensive explosion was the last thing anyone expected. But that’s what happened with the Bears able to outscore Mountain Home 40-35.
The Bombers opened the game with an impressive 14-play 80-yard drive that took over 6 1/2 minutes off the clock. Gage Hershberger capped the drive with a ten yard touchdown run.
Sylvan Hills answered as they needed only five plays to cover 65 yards. Emil McCoy scored on a 33-yard run to tie the game.
Mountain Home would fumble on their very next play and the Bears scored on their next play when McCoy hit Shajuan Esteen with a 24 yard scoring strike.
Mountain Home came back with another 80-yard drive, this one in 10 plays, capped by a 1-yard TD run by Dawson Tabor to pull the Bombers to within 15-13.
Before halftime arrived, Nate Floyd had a 1-yard touchdown run for Sylvan Hills and Mountain Home got a 26-yard field goal from Tabor to make it 22-16 Bears at halftime.
The Bombers would regain the lead quickly in the second half when they covered a pooch kick and three plays later Junior Williams scored a 7-yard touchdown to make it 23-22 Mountain Home.
Sylvan Hills came back wtih a 25-yard field goal by Tito Mendoza to go up by two, followed by a 20-yard field goal by Tabor to put the Bombers back ahead 26-25.
From there, the Bears scored 15 unaswered points. Esteen caught another T.D. pass from Mccoy. Then, after recoving an onside kick, Tre Jackson broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run and in the span of just a few minutes, the Bombers went from one point ahead to down by 14 points.
Mountain Home rounded out the scoring by getting a safety when the Bears snapped it over the punter’s head and out of the end zone. Then Williams had a one yard scoring run on the game’s final play.
On the night, Mountain Home racked up 439 yards of total offense while Sylvan Hills had 389. Williams finished with 185 yards on 29 carries.
The loss drops the Bombers to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the 6A East. Sylvan Hills improves to 3-5 and 2-3. Mountain Home has its final road game of the season next week at Searcy.
