The Mountain Home School District’s Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) days have been approved by the Arkansas Department of Education for the 2018-2019 school year. Mountain Home students will have an opportunity to work from home on an AMI day instead of making up a day later in the school year if inclement weather or another emergency occurs. Mountain Home will have up to five AMI days.

The 2017-2018 school year was the first for Mountain Home to utilize AMI days after using three in January. According to Mountain Home Superintendent Dr. Jake Long, more than 75 percent of parents responding to a survey last year say they prefer the AMI days over making up days later in the year, but the district also received feedback of some assignments taking too much time or being impossible to complete without parents’ assistance. Dr. Long says the district is working to make AMI assignments more manageable for students to complete without parental assistance.

Instructors will create the assignments, and they will be labeled by specific AMI days so students will know when to complete the work. For students without access to the Internet or their AMI packets, a five-day window will be allowed to make up the work when classes resume.

Student attendance on the AMI day will be determined by completion of the assigned day’s work. District administration will decide if a cancelled school day will work as an AMI day. If any of the AMI days are needed, another parent survey will be conducted to collect feedback about the effectiveness of the days. Parents with questions about AMI days are encouraged to contact their child’s principal.
