JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri Republicans are not in danger of losing control of the state Legislature in this year’s election but party leaders acknowledge some concern about a dozen legislative districts based mostly around suburbs near the state’s larger cities.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports incoming House Speaker Elijah Haahr, a Republican from Springfield, suggested voters in suburban St. Louis and Kansas City, and perhaps around Columbia and Springfield, are ready to punish the party of Donald Trump.
If the GOP’s supermajority in the Legislature is reduced to just a majority, Republicans wouldn’t be able to override gubernatorial vetoes on a party-line vote.
Democrats must net two seats in the Senate and eight seats in the House to
take Republicans below a veto-proof majority.
