Registered sex offenders got a visit from law enforcement in Newton County just prior to Halloween and were reminded of the rules for trick-or-treating activities.

The Harrison Daily Times reports law enforcement spent the evening of Oct. 29th visiting registered sex offenders throughout the county to ensure they were in compliance and reminding them of regulations. Newton County Sheriff-elect Glenn Wheeler says deputies, along with officers from the Arkansas Department of Community Corrections, Arkansas State Police and the 14th Judicial District Drug Task Force, partnered in the initiative.

Offenders were reminded they were not allowed to accept trick-or-treaters, have contact with children or have their porch lights on, giving the appearance that trick-or-treaters were welcome.

Wheeler said the operation led to authorities visiting the homes of 24 registered sex offenders. Three arrests were made during the operation, including one male who fled on foot into a wooded area and hid, but was quickly apprehended after being tracked by a Newton County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit.

Wheeler says the safety of our children is a top priority and officers always want the sex offenders of the county to keep in mind law enforcement remembers they are out there and have to follow the rules. He says holding sex offenders to the rules is a zero-tolerance policy.
