Norfork girls, Valley Springs boys win Northark tourney

Norfork’s girls were able to capture their third consecutive North Arkansas College Invitational Senior High Tournament championship Saturday. The Lady Panthers overcame a double digit halftime deficit to get past Valley Springs 68-66 at the Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison.
Valley Springs had better fortunes in the boys’ contest. The Tigers clinched the title with a 73-61 victory over Western Grove.

The Gainesville girls finished the week with the consolation championship of the Sparta Lady Trojans Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Pierce City 46-27.

The George Kell Classic began Saturday in Swiftwon with mixed results for area teams.
Salem was eliminated from the boys’ bracket. The Greyhounds fell to Trumann by a final of 63-43.
Salem suffered the same fate on the girls’ side. The Lady Greyhounds ended up losing to Tuckerman 56-39.
Izard County’s girls fared better as they invoked the mercy rule on the way to a 62-36 victory over Harrisburg. Bethany Simmons led the Lady Cougars with 14 points, Abbi and Alli Marlin scored 13 points each, and Maura Thomason added 12. The Lady Cougars will advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday where they will meet Trumann.
