Courtesy of Motown RecordsA new Grammy concert special celebrating the 60th anniversary of Motown Records will be taped in Los Angeles on Tuesday, February 12 — two days after the 61st Grammy Awards — Billboard reports.
Multiple sources confirmed to the magazine that the event will be the latest in an annual series of tribute concerts held within days of the Grammys to take advantage of the many stars in town for the awards ceremony. The Motown special will air at as at-yet-unannounced date on CBS.
The 60th anniversary Motown tribute follows the famous 1984 NBC special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, on which Michael Jackson performed his famous moonwalk, and ABC’s two-part Motown 40: The Music Is Forever special, which aired in 1998.
The CBS special is one of a number of tribute events marking Motown Records’ 60th anniversary. A three-week exhibit commemorating the milestone opened this past weekend at the Motown Museum in Detroit. It features a variety of memorabilia from the label’s early years.
The 60th anniversary Motown concert comes on the heels of the star-studded, Grammy-organized Aretha Franklin tribute Aretha! A Grammy Celebration, which was taped this past Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A.
That event, which included appearances and performances by Smokey Robinson, Patti LaBelle, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Rob Thomas, Janelle Monáe and others, will air March 10 on CBS.
