A man has been rescued by a passerby after being attacked by multiple dogs in Newton County. Shane Middleton was driving down a dirt road near Jasper when he observed the attack.

Middleton tells Springfield television stations KYTV and KSPR the unidentified male was being eaten up by dogs. Middleton reports he got out of his vehicle and threw a rock at the dogs causing them to scatter. He then picked up the victim who was covered in blood and transported him to the emergency room.

Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler says the victim was wearing full clothing for this time of year, but the dogs had taken him down to his undergarments. Sheriff Wheeler states it’s not clear what led to the attack or the number of dogs involved.

According to Arkansas law, a dog that bites a human should be quarantined for 10 days and observed for rabies, but Sheriff Wheeler says the owners have already captured the dogs and had them put down. Their bodies will be sent to the Arkansas Department of Health for rabies testing.

The dogs’ owners have not been cited, but the sheriff’s office is continuing to look into the attack. At last report, the victim was still hospitalized.
