SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) Officials say three contractors were hurt escaping from
a methane burst at the Springfield Wastewater Treatment Facility.
The Springfield News-Leader reports two of the contractors were taken to a hospital Monday with non-life threatening injuries and the third refused treatment.
Springfield Fire Department Battalion Chief Heith Aldridge says a pocket of
methane gas apparently caught fire as the contractors were working on the roof
of a structure called a tank digester. It takes solid waste and collects methane
gas.
Aldridge says the contractors escaped by jumping off the collapsing roof. The
workers’ injuries are under investigation. The contractors aren’t city
employees.
