LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) An Arkansas House panel has endorsed a proposal to ban
abortion in the state if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns its 1973 ruling that
legalized the procedure nationwide.

The House Public Health Committee on Tuesday approved the proposal to ban all
abortions, except for medical emergencies, if the Roe v. Wade decision is
overturned or the U.S. Constitution is amended to prohibit the procedure. The
ban is backed by abortion opponents who are optimistic the Supreme Court will
support more sweeping abortion restrictions with President Donald Trump’s two
appointees.

The Senate approved the proposal last week. It now heads to the House for a
vote.

Four other states have similar laws triggering abortion bans if the Roe v. Wade
decision is struck down.
