LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) An Arkansas lawmaker is proposing one of the strictest
abortion bans in the country as the Legislature is poised to send the governor a
plan to prohibit the procedure altogether if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns
its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.
The bill filed this week would ban abortions 18 weeks into a woman’s pregnancy, except for medical emergencies. Arkansas already has a law banning the procedure 20 weeks into a woman’s pregnancy.
The bill is among several restrictions the majority-Republican Legislature is
considering during this year’s session. The House on Thursday plans to vote on a
Senate-backed measure that would ban most abortions if the U.S. Supreme Court
overturns its landmark 1973 decision legalizing the procedure nationwide. Four
states have similar “trigger” laws on the books.
