Melbourne girls among area teams advancing to district finals

Several area high school basketball teams were in district tournament action on Thursday.

Melbourne’s girls advanced to the championship game of the 2A-3 District Tournament at Buffalo Island Central High School in Monette. The top-seeded Lady Bearkatz invoked the mercy rule as they routed Sloan-Hendrix 70-26.

The semifinals of the 3A-1 East District Tournament were held at Clinton.
Marshall was eliminated from the boys’ bracket. The Bobcats were doubled up by top-seeded Valley Springs 48-24.
Clinton will be the Tigers’ opponent in Saturday’s title game. Bergman fell to the host Yellowjackets 53-47.
The Mountain View girls will advance to the championship contest. The top-seeded Lady Yellowjackets defeated Bergman 54-44.
Mountain View will be paired with Valley Springs in the finals. The Lady Tigers topped Clinton 63-53.

Two area teams took part in the semifinals of the 1A-5 District Tournament at Timbo.
The host and top-seeded Tigers were able to win on the boys’ side with a 62-55 decision over Concord. Timbo will play in the title game Saturday against the winner of Friday’s game between Greers Ferry West Side and Mount Vernon-Enola.
Rural Special was bounced from the girls’ bracket. The Lady Rebels will end up as a No. 4 seed in next week’s regional tournament after losing to top-seeded Wonderview 73-57.

Both of Jasper’s teams were victorious in the semifinals of the 1A-1 District Tournament on their home floor. The Pirates won on the boys’ side 52-34 over Alpena. The Jasper girls put the mercy rule in effect as they pounded Kingston 80-47.

Harrison had mixed results as they hosted the semifinals of the 4A-1 District Tournament, and both teams played Farmington.
In boys’ action, the Goblins upset the top-seeded Cardinals 64-39. Harrison will face Pea Ridge in the championship game on Saturday.
Harrison’s girls did not fare as well as they were edged out by Farmington 57-53. The Lady Goblins will go up against Pea Ridge Saturday for third place.

Elsewhere, the Gainesville girls were able to win their regular season finale at home. The Lady Bulldogs topped Conway 60-44.

Lutie’s boys had a rough night in their last game before district play begins. The Indians fell to Norwood 70-48.
