A Marion County man, 57-year-old Douglas Bean of Flippin, has been sentenced to six years of supervised probation following an incident in 2018 when he brandished a sword-like knife and threatened to start slicing people over the shooting of fireworks. In addition, Bean was sentenced to 90 days in the Marion County Detention Center and to be given credit for any time served.

The sentencing was handed down in Marion County Circuit Court Wednesday by Circuit Judge John Putman, after Bean entered a negotiated guilty plea to a felony charge of terroristic threatening. He had originally been charged with aggravated assault.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on the evening of July 6th, 2018 a Marion County man told law enforcement he was at his brother’s house along East Main Street in Flippin shooting fireworks. A male subject he identified as Bean approached him and his brother and told them it was illegal to shoot fireworks after the Fourth of July.

He told the brothers he was tired of hearing the fireworks. The complainant said he then went to a gas station in Flippin. While standing at the front of the store, Bean is alleged to have driven by on a scooter, brandished a sword-like knife and pointed it about one inch from his nose. Bean reportedly told the Flippin man if he heard one more firework, he was going to start slicing people.

During the investigation, the clerk in the store confirmed the account of the complainant, saying Bean put the knife away when she told him to calm down.

The Flippin Police Department officer located Bean at his residence along Main Street in Flippin. He told the officer he has PTSD and could not stand the noise of the fireworks. In addition, he said it was illegal to shoot fireworks after the Fourth of July.

The officer advised Bean the City of Flippin allows the shooting of fireworks 10 days prior to the Fourth of July and 10 days afterwards.

When asked about the knife, Bean entered his residence and produced the weapon for the officer.
