
Saturday was filled with high school hoops as regional tournament play ended in Arkansas.
The Class 1A Region 2 Tournament wrapped up its four-day run at Calico Rock.
Norfork’s girls left the Harold Ray Jeffrey Gymnasium with another championship trophy as they defeated Viola 63-51. The Lady Panthers will meet St. Paul Tuesday in the Class 1A State Tournament at Izard County High School in Brockwell, and the Lady Longhorns face Kingston on Thursday.
Mammoth Spring finished third on the girls’ side. The Lady Bears got past Maynard by a final of 60-55. Mammoth Spring goes into the state tournament with a record of 16-16.
The Izard County boys once again ended up as regional champions after routing Hillcrest 85-58. Coby Everett led the Cougars with 34 points, Caleb Faulkner scored 26, and Dylan Tharp added 12. Izard County improves to 38-4 on the season.
Calico Rock ended up in third place with a 61-53 victory over Western Grove. The Pirates will take on Deer Thursday in the state tournament, and the Warriors will play County Line on Tuesday.
Three local teams finished their run in the Class 2A West Regional Tournament at Danville.
Cotter’s girls came away with a third place finish after beating up on Hector 62-42. The Lady Warriors’ first game in the Class 2A State Tournament will be Thursday at Carlisle as they will be paired with Earle.
Flippin did not fare as well in the boys’ third place game as they fell to Mountainburg 65-50. The Bobcats’ first state tournament game will be Tuesday against Clarendon.
The Yellville-Summit boys finished the tournament as regional runners-up as they were edged out by Eureka Springs 32-31. The Panthers’ first opponent in the state tournament will be East Poinsett County on Thursday.
Melbourne’s girls finished the week as the champions of the Class 2A North Regional Tournament after topping Earle 71-57. The Lady Bearkatz will head to Carlisle on Tuesday to meet Hector in the Class 2A State Tournament.
Two area teams competed for third place in the Class 1A Region 3 Tournament at Mount Vernon-Enola.
The Timbo boys came up short as they lost to Bradford 72-64. The Tigers will face Nevada Tuesday in Brockwell to begin the Class 1A State Tournament.
Rural Special’s girls wrapped up the regional tournament with a 73-64 victory over Concord. The Lady Rebels will take on Blevins Wednesday for the state tournament opener.
Three area teams were competing for the championship of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament at Mountain View.
The host Lady Yellowjackets are keeping the first place trophy on campus after defeating Valley Springs 66-62 in overtime. Mountain View will play Two Rivers in their first game in the Class 3A State Tournament Wednesday at Osceola, and the Lady Tigers will be matched up with Atkins later that day.
Valley Springs fared better on the boys’ side as they won the title by beating Waldron 60-43. The Tigers’ first state tournament opponent will be Fountain Lake on Wednesday.
The Harrison girls finished the week as the champions of the Class 4A North Regional Tournament following a 28-23 victory over Berryville at Morrilton. The Lady Goblins will have a first round bye in the Class 4A State Tournament at Magnolia, and they’ll play Friday in the quarterfinals against either Highland or De Queen.
Jasper suffered a pair of losses to finish the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament at County Line High School in Branch.
The Lady Pirates lost the title game to Alpena by a score of 54-49. Mammoth Spring will be Jasper’s opponent Thursday in the Class 1A State Tournament at Izard County High School.
Jasper’s boys ended up in fourth place after falling to the New School 58-53. The Pirates will be paired with the host Cougars in the first boys’ game on Tuesday
District play came to an end for smaller schools in Missouri, and the Dora boys punched their ticket to the Class 1 State Tournament. The Falcons won the title of the Class 1, District 3 Tournament at Cabool by topping Eminence 64-59. Dora is now 27-1 on the year, and their sectional opponent will be Chadwick Tuesday in Mountain Grove.
Branson was able to sweep Springfield Glendale on Saturday to begin the Class 5, District 11 Tournament at Kickapoo High School in Springfield.
The Lady Pirates picked up a 70-62 win over the Lady Falcons to begin the afternoon. Branson’s record is now 15-11, and they’ll face the host and top-seeded Lady Chiefs in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Branson’s boys also eliminated Glendale by a final of 70-66. The Pirates improve to 12-14 on the season, and their semifinal game will be Tuesday as they’ll also take on top-seeded Kickapoo.
