20 area teams to compete in state tournaments

State tournaments begin this week for high school basketball in Arkansas and Missouri, and a total of 20 area teams will be competing.

Mountain Home’s girls will be at Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy for the Class 5A State Tournament as they will be matched up with Sheridan on Thursday. The Lady Bombers are currently 17-10 after finishing in a tie for third place in the 5A-East with Paragould and winning the tiebreaker for the No. 3 seed. The Lady Yellowjackets are the second-seeded team from the 5A-South with a record of 22-4. Thursday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Four local teams will be in Carlisle for the Class 2A State Tournament. In girls’ action, Melbourne meets Hector Tuesday at 4:00, and Cotter faces Earle Thursday at 4:00. On the boys’ bracket, Flippin takes on Clarendon Tuesday at 5:30, and Yellville-Summit plays East Poinsett County Thursday at 2:30.

The Class 1A State Tournament will be held at Izard County High School in Brockwell. On the girls’ side, Norfork tips off against St. Paul Tuesday at 1:00, Rural Special will be paired with Blevins Wednesday at 4:00, Mammoth Spring and Jasper get underway Thursday at 1:00, and Viola meets Kingston Thursday at 4:00. In the boys’ games, Izard County faces Jasper Tuesday at 2:30, Western Grove takes on County Line Tuesday at 5:30, Timbo plays Nevada Tuesday at 8:30, and Calico Rock will be matched up with Deer Thursday at 2:30.

Three area teams will take part in the Class 3A State Tournament Wednesday at Osceola. In girls’ action, Mountain View tips off against Two Rivers at 1:00, and Valley Springs meets Atkins at 4:00. The Valley Springs boys will face Fountain Lake at 2:30.

Harrison’s girls will have a first round bye in the Class 4A State Tournament at Magnolia as the North regional champions. The Lady Goblins will play in the quarterfinals Friday at 4:00 against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Highland and De Queen.

State tournament play also begins for the smaller schools in Missouri, and the Dora boys will be in Mountain Grove for their opener in the Class 1 State Tournament. The Falcons’ opponent in the sectional round will be Chadwick Tuesday evening at 6:00.
