Norfork girls among opening day winners in state tournaments

There was high school basketball Tuesday as state tournaments got underway across Arkansas and Missouri.

Izard County began hosting the Class 1A State Tournament at the Cougar Den in Brockwell.
Norfork’s girls breezed through the opening game as they routed St. Paul 62-30. The Lady Panthers will advance to the quarterfinals Thursday night as they meet the winner of Wednesday’s game between Rural Special and Blevins.
Izard County’s boys followed by eliminating Jasper with an 87-36 decision. Coby Everett led the host Cougars with 23 points, Justus Cooper scored 17, and Dylan Tharp added 13. Izard County improves to 39-4 on the season, and they will play the last game Thursday night as they meet either Bradford or Dermott.
The Timbo boys watched their season come to an end in the last game of the day. The Tigers were edged out by Nevada 72-68.
Western Grove’s boys were also one and done in the tournament. The Warriors fell to County Line by a final of 66-39.

The Class 2A State Tournament got underway at Carlisle.
Flippin’s boys were eliminated from the opening round. The Bobcats ended up losing to to Clarendon 68-30.
Melbourne’s girls invoked the mercy rule in their opening game as they pounded Hector 75-24. The Lady Bearkatz will move on to the quarterfinals and meet either Spring Hill or Poyen on Friday.

The Dora boys dominated their opening game in the Class 1 State Tournament at Mountain Grove. The Falcons beat up on Chadwick 81-44 in the sectional round. Dora is now 28-1 on the year, and they’ll face Risco in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Van Buren.

West Plains’ girls began action in the Class 4, District 11 Tournament in an easy manner at Logan-Rogersville High School. The Lady Zizzers destroyed Reeds Spring 83-34 in the semifinals. West Plains’ record is now 18-9, and they’ll take on the host and top-seeded Lady Wildcats for the district title on Saturday.

The Branson boys’ season ended in the semifinals of the Class 5, District 11 Tournament at Kickapoo High School in Springfield. The Pirates fell to the host Chiefs 64-56. Branson wraps up the year at 12-15.
