LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) An Arkansas lawmaker wants to require outside groups
spending money on the state’s top judicial races to disclose their donors, after
about $2.5 million worth of mailers and TV ads flowed in ahead of last year’s
election for a spot on the state’s top court.
A bill filed this week by Republican Rep. Jimmy Gazaway would expand the
definition of independent groups that are required to file reports with the
state and would require them to release detailed reports about their donors.
The measure has the backing of state Supreme Court Justice Courtney Goodson,
who was re-elected in November after facing an onslaught of outside spending.
The Republican State Leadership Committee, which targeted Goodson last year, is
criticizing the bill as an assault on free speech.
