Izard County boys win Class 1A state championship

For the first time in 11 years, the Izard County High School boys’ basketball team can claim the title of state champions. The Cougars pulled away from Nevada for a 67-46 victory to win the Class 1A crown at Bank OZK Arena in Hot Springs.

Izard County’s double digit lead was cut down in the third quarter as the Blue Jays eventually made it a one-possession game. The Cougars pulled back away in the final period to get the 21-point victory in front of a crown of nearly 4,000.

Caleb Faulkner led Izard County with 24 points, Coby Everett scored 17, and state tournament MVP Justus Cooper added 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Cougars finish the season with a record of 42-4.
