VAN BUREN, Ark. (AP) Five people have been charged after inmates at a western
Arkansas jail rioted last week, causing at least $20,000 worth of damage.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Wednesday 39 inmates broke ceiling lights, tore down ceiling panels and ripped out a sprinkler system in the Crawford County jail library Friday evening, causing the Van Buren facility to be locked down until Monday.

The Crawford County sheriff’s office said the riot began when a jailer tried
removing an unruly inmate, Joshua Estes, from a common area. Estes, who was
awaiting trial for theft and drug charges, has been charged with inciting a
riot.

The sheriff’s office released body camera footage of the melee, handcuffing
inmates in pooled water that had also flooded jail cells. No one was seriously
injured.
