After suffering what was described as a “minor stroke” on February 28 and being hospitalized since then in Memphis, Tennessee, Jerry Lee Lewis is now in a rehabilitation center, according to a statement from the 83-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member’s representative.
The statement also includes an assurance from Lewis’ neurologist, Dr. Rohini Bhole, that he’s “expected to fully recover with aggressive and intensive rehab. From what I have seen thus far, he is heading in the right direction.”
During his rehab, Lewis will cancel scheduled appearances April 28 at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, May 18 at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, and June 8 at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA.
The statement goes on to say Lewis “greatly appreciates the prayers and well wishes he’s received from fans all over the world.”
Lewis, of course, is one of rock and roll’s true pioneers, with enduring hits including “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” His pioneering influence on rock and roll was exceeded only by his wild and controversial lifestyle, which includes seven marriages, one of which was to his then-13-year-old cousin when Lewis was 22.
