A Benton County teen is in jail after he was found hiding in a laundry room Monday after evading law enforcement earlier this month when it appeared he and his vehicle were surrounded. Two other men have been arrested and charged with hindering apprehension.
According to the probable cause affidavit, 18-year-old Gary Requa Jr. of Pea Ridge was located at a Flippin residence, after occupants of the home told law enforcement he had left about 30 minutes earlier.
With one of the two men, 27-year-old Patrick Martin of Mountain Home, on active probation with an active search waiver on file, the home was searched and Requa was located hiding behind a washer and dryer. He and Martin were arrested without further incident.
However, the second man at the residence, 48-year-old Philip Henley of Lakeview, resisted arrest until he was tased. Henley and Martin were charged with hindering apprehension, with an additional count of resisting arrest filed against the Lakeview man. Online jail records indicate their bonds were less than $1,000.
According to a second affidavit, Requa’s arrest follows an incident on March 9th when a Marion County deputy on patrol had been advised the Benton County teen could be at a residence along State Highway 101 and was traveling in a black car.
Requa was wanted on warrants from Marion County and the Cotter Police Department, with a suspended driver’s license.
The deputy observed a black car exit from the residence and travel into a pull-off at the intersection of Arkansas Highway 101 and U.S. Highway 62/412. As the vehicle attempted to return to the highway, it traveled into a ditch, where it became stuck.
A female driver returned to the nearby residence twice on foot. Upon returning to her car a second time, the deputy pulled his patrol unit alongside the woman’s vehicle to offer assistance.
He then observed a second black car operated by a male individual, later identified as Requa, on the other side of the woman’s stuck vehicle. When Requa pulled a short distance away, the woman advised the deputy individuals at the residence would pull her vehicle out of the ditch.
As the deputy was speaking with the woman, officers from the Arkansas State Police, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Flippin Police Department arrived. The woman identified Requa as the driver of the second black vehicle, as the deputy observed two fellow officers talking with the teen with his vehicle running and his car door open.
As two officers stood next to the driver’s door of Requa’s vehicle and the third in front of the car, the deputy provided them with the Benton teen’s true identity, after he had provided a fictitious name, and advised he was wanted on outstanding warrants.
When Requa was directed to turn off the engine of his car, he accelerated forward in a dangerous manner, spinning the tires toward the trooper. It also appeared to the deputy that the vehicle struck the trooper’s right leg. The trooper stumbled, but still on his feet returned to his vehicle.
A pursuit ensued from Highway 101 onto Highway 62/412 at a high rate of speed, encountering multiple vehicles, before moving onto County Road 7041. The pursuit was terminated on County Rod 6001 when two ATVs were observed in the roadway.
Requa has been charged with felony counts of fleeing and aggravated assault, along with misdemeanor counts of obstructing governmental operations, fictitious tags, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license and failure to stop or yield.
His bond on these charges was set at $20,000.
