The 22nd Sowbug Roundup, a three-day fly tying and fly fishing show, kicked off Thursday and continues through Saturday at the Baxter County Fairgrounds. The event is sponsored by the North Arkansas Fly Fishers.According to the NAFF website, the first sowbug event had 20 tiers and over 150 attendees. Last year’s event attracted over 100 tiers and more than 1,000 attendees.Tiers come from across the USA, and there are usually two or three from overseas. The show floor is set up to facilitate access to the flytiers, with attendees encouraged to sit and to talk about fly tying, fly fishing and how to tie a fly.

One of the goals of the sowbug is to encourage more people, especially young people to become involved in fly fishing.

The Sowbug Roundup is the North Arkansas Fly Fishers’ sole annual fundraising event. Proceeds allow NAFF to finance its environmental and philanthropic activities. NAFF allocates $10,000 annually for scholarships to students majoring in the fishery or environmental fields.
