Grateful Dead ProductionsThe Grateful Dead will continue its 50th anniversary catalog reissue campaign by releasing an expanded version of its third studio album, 1969’s Aoxomoxoa, on June 7.

The Aoxomoxoa: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will available as a two-CD set. The first disc features remastered versions of the album’s original mix and of the 1971 band-produced mix. The second has previously unreleased live performances recorded during a January 24-26, 1969, stand at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.

Aoxomoxoa was released in June 1969, and includes the popular Dead tunes “St. Stephen” and “China Cat Sunflower.” It has been certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies in the U.S.

Regarding Aoxomoxoa‘s history, Grateful Dead archivist Dave Lemieux says, “In 1969, for their third album, the Grateful Dead eschewed outside producers and created Aoxomoxoa themselves, beginning a run of self-produced albums that would continue until 1977.”

He writes, “Scrapping the first sessions, which were recorded to eight-track tape, the Dead now had 16 tracks with which to experiment their psychedelic sound, with an album that included entirely Robert Hunter-penned lyrics for the first time.”

The live disc features early renditions of the Aoxomoxoa tunes “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” and “Doin’ That Rag,” as well as the final live performance of the early Dead song “Clementine,” which the band never recorded in the studio.

In addition to the two-CD deluxe version of the album, a vinyl picture disc featuring the new remaster of the 1971 band-produced mix will be released on June 7.
