A Newton County man, 59-year-old Troy Gene Carter of Parthenon, has been arrested and faces charges of attempted rape and second-degree sexual assault. The charges are in connection with an alleged incident Monday in the Little Buffalo River area.
Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler says Carter saw an underage female whom he recognized sunbathing beside the river. The alleged victim said Carter made small talk, and thinking he had left the area, she resumed sunbathing.
Wheeler says the female was then startled when Carter, who had snuck back over to her, moved her swimsuit aside, touched her inappropriately and told her other things he wanted to do to her.
The sheriff says in an interview at the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Carter allegedly admitted to the allegations.
Wheeler says the victim has known Carter since she was a young girl, and he had watched her grow up, making the reported incident even more disturbing.
