The Twin Lakes Community Foundation is continuing its effort to connect community needs with necessary resources. The foundation held a luncheon on Friday and awarded a total of $24,100 to 18 nonprofits in Baxter, Marion, Fulton and Izard counties.

The Giving Tree Endowment generated grants this year to the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas to provide fresh produce to its clients; the Junior Auxiliary of Mountain Home for its Reading is Fun program; the Ozark Center of Hope for its personal care pantry; Single Parent Scholarship funds in Baxter, Marion, Fulton and Izard counties; the Calico Rock Community Foundation for its Bridges Back to School program; Kindness, Inc., to provide transportation to medical appointments for disabled senior citizens; Arkansas State University-Mountain Home to stock an emergency food pantry; Serenity, Inc., to replace linens for its shelter; the Call of Baxter County to provide required training for foster families; the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation to provide eye care for needy children; the Van Matre Senior Center to support its congregate meals and Meals on Wheels; the Yellville-Summit Backpack Program to provide weekend food to children; and the Mountain Home High School Career Academies EAST program for a poverty simulation.

Two additional grants were awarded from the Stop Hunger Endowment. One grant went to the Yellville Food Closet Association, and the First United Methodist Church Backpack Food for Kids program received the other grant.

The Twin Lakes Community Foundation has awarded over $300,000 in Giving Tree grants since 2003 and nearly $18,000 in Stop Hunger grants since 2009. Executive Director Gwen Khayat says there is a selection process for the committee once the online grant applications have been submitted.
