LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – An Arkansas man accused of stomping on the head of a
U.S. airman on a military base in Japan has been convicted by a federal jury of
attempted manslaughter.
Justice Department and Air Force officials said Thursday 44-year-old Rodrigo
Pineda Gomez was also convicted of assault, resisting a federal officer and
making a false statement to law enforcement.
Officials say Gomez, formerly of Jacksonville, and his 21-year-old son Miguel
Gomez assaulted three airmen on Misawa Air Base in 2016. Officials say Rodrigo
Gomez attempted to kill one of the airmen by trying to snap his neck and
stomping on his head.
Authorities also accused him of lying about who threw the first punch.
Miguel Gomez pleaded guilty last week to one count of assault.
A sentencing date hasn’t been set.
