Saturday will be the annual National Take Back Day and the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office will take part in the effort to remove unwanted, unused and potentially dangerous controlled substances and over-the-counter medications from medicine cabinets. Sheriff John Montgomery says his office will hold the Take Back Event Saturday from 10 until 2 in the parking lot of Orscheln Farm and Home, and deputies will be on-site to assist members of the public.
Sheriff Montgomery says National Take Back Day provides an opportunity to surrender expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical-controlled substances or other medications for destruction.
Listen:
In years past, flushing medications and drugs was considered a safe method of disposal, but authorities have since realized drugs do not completely disintegrate and are contaminating the waterways. In addition, wastewater treatment plants and septic systems are not designed to treat pharmaceutical waste.
The drop-off location at Orscheln will accept pills and medications in a bottle, bag or other disposable container free of charge. The drugs will later be destroyed using drug incinerator equipment. Anyone with questions can contact the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office at 870-425-7000.
