Tornado warnings down in 2019, but peak season ahead with shifting tornado alley

Prior to Tuesday afternoon, if you thought it’s been a pretty quiet start to the severe weather season in the Twin Lakes Area, you would be correct, but there are still nearly six weeks left in the peak season. While severe storms have not been as numerous so far in 2019, the National Weather Service office in North Little Rock has still been busy. Chris Buonanno is a meteorologist at the NWS and says while only a few tornado warnings have been issued for the 47 counties they serve, they have been kept busy with flash flood warnings.

A study released in the fall indicates “tornado alley” may be shifting east where it affects a large chunk of Arkansas and Southern Missouri. The study was conducted from 1979 through 2017.

Buonanno says the peak time for severe weather in Arkansas typically is mid to late May.
