FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – Leaders in Fayetteville are considering a measure that would prevent the city from using public money to buy disposable products made with Styrofoam.
The Fayetteville City Council discussed the proposal Tuesday night but took no action. The measure would also prohibit vendors, concession stands or food trucks operating on city property from using polystyrene foam, better known as Styrofoam.
The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the proposal is set to be
considered again later this month.
Last month, Maine became the first state to ban single-use food and drink
containers made from Styrofoam. Oregon, Vermont and Connecticut are also
considering banning the containers, and dozens of communities from Berkeley, California, to New York City have already passed their own bans, some of which date back to the late 1980s.
