Local baseball, softball teams have mixed results in state quarterfinals

Viola’s softball team watched its season come to an end Friday in the Class 1A State Tournament at Taylor. The Lady Longhorns lost to Hermitage by a score of 11-0.
Calico Rock was also eliminated in the quarterfinals. The Lady Pirates lost to Taylor 10-0.

Two area softball teams competed in the semifinals of the Class 2A State Tournament on Freedom Field at McClain Park in Mountain Home.
Salem, designated as the host school, suffered a tough loss in the first game of the day. The Lady Greyhounds were edged out by Quitman 2-1.
Melbourne was able to advance to the semifinals after shutting out Parkers Chapel 3-0. The Lady Bearkatz will take the field again Saturday at 2:30.
Melbourne’s opponent in the final four will be Poyen. The Lady Indians pounded McCrory 9-1.
In another quarterfinal game, East Poinsett County blanked South Side-Bee Branch 4-0.

Viola’s baseball team is one win away from advancing to the state championship game. The Longhorns pounded Bradley 14-5 in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Tournament at Taylor.
Izard County was eliminated from the tournament at Taylor. The Cougars ended up falling to the host Tigers 7-3.

Salem ended up falling in the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament on Pitts Field at McClain Park in Mountain Home. The designated host Greyhounds was defeated by Junction City 11-1.
In the other quarterfinal games, Woodlawn beat Lavaca 12-5, McCrory squeaked by Parkers Chapel 5-4, and Horatio destroyed Bay 23-1.

Harrison was bounced from the Class 4A State Baseball Tournament at Southside Batesville. The Goblins lost in the quarterfinals to Valley View 4-3.

District play began for high school baseball in Missouri on Friday, and Forsyth won its postseason opener in Clever. The Panthers blanked Sarcoxie 15-0 to improve to 7-14 on the season. Forsyth will face top-seeded Marionville in Monday’s semifinals.
